GW wont connect to Anet
Ok.. when i go to play GW and click on the shortcut or go through the start menu or dirrectly from the cd... the initail GW screen pops up, the one with the "Connecting to Anet" loading bar. But nothing happens after that. I have checked my firewall and all antivirus settings.. evything is the same as it was the last time i played.. about 11 hrs ago. None of my settings have changed at all. I have checked my processes and nothing seems out of the ordinary. Have ran an antivirus scan... no problems.
I am out of ideas!

Thor, disable/close your firewall and try it.
If it doesn't work, try re-installing GW.

5 bucks says you are using Norton Firewall. Norton Firewall is a waste. Uninstall it and just use the Windows Firewall.
I had the same problem, so I know from experience. Just don't download any bots or skill calculators or anthing. I also use AVG antivirus free edition, I had preloaded Norton but it tries to take over the whole system (which would be alright if it knew what it is doing) so I uninstalled it. My computer has ran better than ever, ever since.
Three cheers for uninstalling norton!

Qutoed for TRUTH! I used to have Norton Internet security installed and it gave me nothing but problems - mostly with email accounts accessing the SMTP servers but occasionally would prevent GW from connecting. I have since uninstalled that Norton C.R.A.P. and installed the free version of McAfee Antivirus that COMCAST high speed internet customers can get. THANKS COMCAST! No more access problems!

Only firewall I ever use is Windows XP's builtin plus I also am hooked upto a router. As for antivirus I use Avast. Best damn free antivirus there is. Only downisde is you need to email in for a free special key that unlocks the trial. Not one problem since day 1 on both fronts. As for Norton I will never touch that crap. I have heard nothing but bad news about it.

You might need to port foward the port 6112, or whichever the port is for guildwars.

Check your HOSTS file to make sure nothing has been changed. On XP it's located in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder. It doesn't have an extension, so open it with Notepad.
It should only have one entry:
127.0.0.1 localhost
Every other line should be preceeded with a # sign. If there are other entries in the HOSTS file and you didn't put them there, then some program has been mucking around with your settings. Delete every entry in the file EXCEPT the line mentioned above (and note if any of those changed entries pertain to Guild Wars or Anet), and save it, then reboot and try again.
*Don't modify that file unless you have to! And remember never to delete or change the localhost line!

Try creating a new user account on your WinXP system, then log into it and launch GW.exe. If it works, then something is hosed with the old windows user account. If it doesn't work, then you can try emptying the %temp% and prefetch system folders (you might have to drop into safe mode to do this).
